The 4 Leadership Programs

GC LAU Model United Nations (GCLAUMUN)

GC LAU MUN, launched in 2005 offers high school and middle school students the opportunity to simulate the proceedings of an actual United Nations conference. Students are introduced to the foundations of the United Nations, the flow of the procedure and debate of a typical UN conference, as well as important soft skills that will advance their professional development. By joining MUN, students get the chance to experience prominent challenges faced by the United Nations, global power dynamics, and how international diplomats debate cross-cutting world issues facing the international community.

In GC LAU MUN:

  • English is the language of instruction
  • Both middle school & high school students can participate
  • 2 training sessions and a mock simulation are held to prepare students for the final conference

Over a two-day conference, students will embody an ambassador of a certain member state partaking in a debate within a particular UN body or agency.

Registration is open for both:

  • School Delegations (endorsed and accompanied by a school advisor)
  • Individual Delegates (registering alone and not accompanied by their school)

LAU Model Arab League (LAUMAL)

In association with the National Council on US Arab Relations (NCUSAR) since 2011, MAL introduces high school students to the structure, history, and proceedings of the Arab League, and helps them develop various interpersonal skills that needed to devise tangible solutions to questions faced by Arab diplomats on a daily basis. Through the program, students engage in critical debates exploring prominent social, political, and economic issues currently affecting the Arab world.

In LAU MAL:

  • Arabic and English are the languages of instruction
  • Both middle school & high school students can participate
  • 2 training sessions and a mock simulation are held to prepare students for the final conference

Over a two-day conference, students will roleplay as representatives of the 22 Arab League member states and prominent actors in the region addressing pressing concerns to the region within an AL conference.

Registration is open for both:

  • School Delegations (endorsed and accompanied by a school advisor)
  • Individual Delegates (registering alone and not accompanied by their school)

LAU Model European Union (LAUMEU)

Running since 2015 in partnership with the Bringing Europeans Together Association (BETA), MEU invites students to explore the European Union and its strategic and geographic potential as well as the dynamics between the EU Member States at the commercial, cultural, and social levels to understand the primordial nature of the European continent in world politics. Through the program, high school students have the opportunity to represent various European Union member states and prominent figures in a simulation of European Union institutions, learning about the European Union’s history and structure, and the flow of the procedure and debate of a typical EU conference.

In LAU MEU:

  • French and English are the languages of instruction
  • High school students can participate
  • 2 training sessions and a mock simulation are held to prepare students for the final conference

Over a two-day conference, students will represent a Member of the European Parliament, a Head of State, or a European minister in coming up with policy recommendations for prominent issues facing the European Union.

Registration is open for both:

  • School Delegations (endorsed and accompanied by a school advisor)
  • Individual Delegates (registering alone and not accompanied by their school)

LAU Model Good Governance (LAUMGG)

Launched in 2020 in collaboration with the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF), MGG aims to educate Lebanese high school students about the principles of good governance and their application in Lebanon as well as empower them to find innovative solutions to the most pressing economic, political, and social issues facing the country. The simulation model helps students come to a better understanding of the state of governance in Lebanon, inviting them to come up with sustainable reforms and policy recommendations to resolve current issues in the country.

In LAU MGG:

  • English is the language of instruction
  • High school students can participate
  • 2 training sessions and a mock simulation are held to prepare students for the final conference

Over a two-day conference, students will represent a certain international organization or non-governmental organization partaking in a debate within a specific Lebanese Ministry.

Registration is open for both:

  • School Delegations (endorsed and accompanied by a school advisor)
  • Individual Delegates (registering alone and not accompanied by their school)

Training & Conference Details

The Delegates

Delegates are participants who represent the viewpoints of assigned countries, organizations, or individuals. They engage in debates, draft resolutions, and collaborate with other delegates to address global issues, following procedures modeled after those of the United Nations, European Union, Arab league, or Good Governance.

LAUSM delegates can be High School or Middle School students with languages of instruction being English, Arabic, or French. This depends on the programs being offered - please check "The 4 Leadership Programs" for more information.

The Advisors

Advisors are typically teachers, mentors, or experienced previous LAUSM participants who guide and support the delegates. They help with preparation, offer strategic advice, and ensure that the delegates understand the rules and procedures of the conference. Advisors do not participate directly in the debates but provide behind-the-scenes assistance to ensure the delegates perform effectively.

LAUSM Advisors receive the opportunity to join a series special Professional Development Workshops while their delegates are attending their sessions. Upon completion of the required sessions, advisors receive a workshop completion certificate.

Registration Modes

The registration process can vary between individual and delegation registrations:

  • Individual Registration: This is when a single participant registers independently to attend the conference. They represent a country, organization, or individual on their own and participate in the training sessions, debates, and activities without being part of a larger team from a specific institution.
  • Delegation Registration: This involves a group of participants from the same school, or organization registering together as a team. Each member of the delegation represents the country or positions assigned to the delegation within the conference. The delegation is usually led by one or more advisors who assist and oversee the group.

Sessions & Conference Locations

LAUSM hosts its simulation model training sessions, typically on its campuses. LAU has two main campuses:

  • Beirut Campus: Located in the capital city of Beirut, this campus often serves as a venue for various academic and extracurricular activities, including LAUSM training sessions and conferences.
  • Byblos Campus: Situated in Byblos, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, this campus also hosts numerous events and training sessions.

Upon registration, participants can select their campus of preference for training session attendance. Final Conference Locations are determined based on program of joining and not based on initial preference selection.

Fees & Payment

LAUSM participation and conference fees are published upon the release of the Annual LAUSM Handbook (above). These fees cover Training Sessions, Mock Simulation, Delegate Training Material Access, Virtual ID Card, Virtual Profiles, Conference Preparation Material (Background Guides), Delegate Placards, Certificate of Participation, and any additional extra curricular - if launched.

N.B All participants from Lebanese Public Schools (Officially Registered with that Status at the Lebanese Ministry of Education and Higher Education) are exempt from the LAUSM registration fees.

Attendance & Modality

LAUSM typically and unless otherwise officially announced operates under a 100% In-Person program.

  • In-Person: Traditionally, LAUSM trainings and conferences are held in person, allowing delegates to engage in face-to-face debates, discussions, and networking. These events are typically hosted on LAU's Beirut or Byblos campuses. Attendance criteria and specific completion requirements are published in the the LAUSM Registration and Regulation Guide (RRG)

In exceptional circumstances, force majeures, or where deemed necessary, LAUSM may adopt other modalities.

  • Virtual: In response to circumstances like the COVID-19 pandemic, LAU has also adopted virtual modalities. Online conferences are conducted via digital platforms, enabling remote participation while maintaining the structure and format of traditional MUN events.
  • Hybrid: Some events may use a hybrid model, combining both in-person and virtual participation. This approach provides flexibility, accommodating delegates who cannot attend in person.

08 | Safety

Safety Standards

At the Lebanese American University Simulation Models (LAUSM), the safety and security of our participants are our top priorities.

Below you can navigate though our LAUSM tailored procedures to ensure a seamless flow of our sessions, and full preparedness for any safety or security event encountered.

Download maps of the facilities, EEDP tailored zones, emergency equipment locations, assembly points, shelter designations, and more by visiting your post-registration virtual profile.

Safety & Security Practices

Safety

To ensure staff and participant comfort and preparedness for any unexpected situations, we implement stringent safety protocols.

  • Each session begins with a safety video outlining key procedures, followed by a detailed briefing.
  • Our comprehensive safety measures cover a range of scenarios, including fire, earthquake, and medical emergencies.
  • Our initial registration phase requires the designation of an emergency contact person for every participant.
  • Our staff are thoroughly trained and regularly quizzed on the procedures for various scenarios, with team leaders holding relevant certifications, ensuring readiness to handle any situation that may arise.
  • LAUSM maintains an Emergency Care Team (ECT) comprising certified first responders specifically trained to handle medical emergencies. This dedicated team is equipped with the necessary skills and resources to provide immediate assistance and medical care as needed.
  • Medical evacuation where required (hospital transport) in cases of escalations is immediately coordinated to the nearest LAU Medical Center (LAUMC Rizk Hospital or LAUMC St. John's Hospital) or in severe cases (upon medical expert recommendation) to the closest available hospital.

Security

To ensure staff and participant comfort and preparedness for any unexpected security situations, we implement stringent security protocols.

  • LAU Campuses and all LAUSM event access is restricted solely to valid LAUSM ID holders.
  • LAU Campus gates are closely monitored through ID scanning systems ensuring all time awareness of registered participants on campus.
  • We continue to monitor the full campus grounds throughout the day to ensure highest levels of composure and abidance by regulations.
  • We have a robust notification system that promptly informs registered advisors and school principals of necessary updates according to our escalation policies for safety and security escalations.
  • LAU security personnel are available for any escalations or required interventions.
  • All reports of suspicious activity or non-compliance are handled by program management as soon as they are reported with an the necessary investigations carried out.

Safety & Security Protocol Activation

Lockdown

In case a lockdown is necessitated during LAUSM hours, LAUSM will promptly communicate through email and social media, along with updates on our website. Students will remain in safe designated areas on our campuses until we officially confirm their safety. Once confirmed, we will initiate an "EEDP" (described below) and request that school advisors or the assigned guardian pick them up from our campuses. A verification process will be ensured at campus gates using our digital system of LAUSM databases and IDs.

Priority Notification System

Priority Notification System

Emergency Early Dismissal

If we need to stop LASUM early due to an emergency, we will implement an "Emergency Early Dismissal Procedure" (EEDP). Notifications will be sent via email and social media, along with updates on our website (to be announced).

We will also request school advisors or the designated guardian to pick delegates form campus at their designated EEDP location.

Understanding that you might not be available for an emergency early dismissal, we'll send a message requesting the contact details of an authorized person who can pick up your child if you're unavailable. Your swift response to this message is crucial. A verification process will be ensured at campus gates using our digital system of LAUSM databases and IDs.

Ministry Enforced Closure

In the event that the Minister of Education requests the closure of educational institutions, we will swiftly transition to online teaching and learning should the situation in the country allow for it, or we will announce the date for a rescheduled session. We will remain in continuous coordination with all participants.

DEIA, Community Standards, & Code of Conduct

DEIA & Community Standards

DEIA:  Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility.

  • Ensure safety and well-being through education, prevention, and equitable response to concerns.
  • Empower our community with the knowledge, tools, and resources to uphold our shared values of integrity, compassion, and accountability.

Group of people assembling large puzzle pieces on the ground.

Friedrich Naumann Foundation (FNF)

Since 2020, The Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF) Lebanon's partnership with the Lebanese American University (LAU) has provided a transformative experience, equipping students with essential leadership and governance skills - through the partnership with the LAU Model Good Governance Program (LAUMGG).

Our combined goal is to offer even more opportunities for young leaders to excel. Our joint mission remains to nurture a new generation of thinkers and change makers, ready to tackle the challenges of an interconnected world.

Oxford Corridor

For the first year in 2025, LAU Simulation Models has joined forces with Oxford Corridor to help shape the future of global diplomacy!  As part of this incredible collaboration, LAUSM sends top-notch chairs to be a part of MUNGlobal and other prestigious MUN conferences in Turkey.

This partnership is a testament to our commitment to fostering global dialogue, leadership, and innovation at the international level.
